DDA compliant accessories from Washroom Washroom

DDA compliant bathroom accessories specified for commercial washrooms

  • 24 Aug 2017

Washroom Washroom has committed to delivering commercial bathroom facilities with DDA compliant accessories.

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) has been in place to prevent discrimination against the less able for more than twenty years.

In terms of washroom design, the act states that specifiers need to do more than provide disabled facilities with wide cubicles and outward opening doors. To ensure accessibility for all, specialist washroom accessories, such as cubicle locks, door handles and grab rails, should be fitted.

There also needs to be a distinct level of contrast in colour between these accessories and the surface to which they have been fitted. In order to meet DDA regulations, a difference in Light Reflective Value (LRV) of at least 30 points should be achieved.

Creating DDA compliant washrooms

Taking these guidelines into account, Washroom has used DDA compliant accessories on several commercial washrooms in recent months.

For one project, brass finish ironmongery was fixed to a black laminate cubicle fascia; more recently, the company has utilised cubicle locks, hinges, coat hooks and pull handles with a bronze finish.

Elsewhere, Washroom fitted matt effect, stainless steel locks to a white laminate cubicle door, highlighting how DDA compliant accessories can be used as a striking design feature.
