Primary school meets energy targets with Wilo pumps

Wilo Stratos low energy pumps have been installed at Auckley Primary School in Doncaster to create an efficient and renewable heating system.

When extending its classroom area, the South Yorkshire primary school decided to incorporate renewable technology where it could. Therefore, it was decided that a ground source heat pump would replace the existing gas fired heating system and provide heating, cooling and hot water for the entire building.

JKN Renewables from Epworth carried out the installation which specified 2 NIBE ground source heat pumps to provide 80kW of heating along with a 300 litre buffer and 750 litre bespoke thermal store to cover the hot water requirements.

Ten 250m loops were installed in trenches to provide the renewable heat and a low loss header provided underfloor heating in the extension, whilst a buffer tank served the main school area.

In addition, the UFH and fan coils in the classrooms enabled passive cooling to be integrated.

Wilo Stratos low energy pumps maximised efficiency and performance of the heating circulators, with heating and hot water demand expected to be 118,000kWh less with a CO2 reduction of around 17.7 tonnes a year.

Overall, the energy savings will attract annual payments of around £11,350 and the annual cost savings when compared to a gas fired system are around £3,900. Plus, there is a ‘free’ passive cooling available in the summer months which is significantly more efficient than a conventional cooling system.
