Flooring suppliers of all sizes are rising to the challenge of recycling carpets, according to Axion-managed Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), the industry’s association for recycling and reusing carpet.
CRUK also report that suppliers are asking for advice on how they can offer a recycling service, while bringing down their disposal costs.
Throughout the three-day 2017 Harrogate Flooring Show, the CRUK team handled numerous enquiries from companies across the carpet supply chain seeking alternative sustainable options for disposing of both uplifted carpet and post-installation offcuts. Carpet Recycling UK gives advice on reuse and recycling options for both domestic and commercial flooring.
The above picture features CRUK members James Bagdadi of DESSO, David, Dawn and Bill from Clinton Carpets, with Robert Barker of CRUK.
CRUK Director Laurance Bird commented: “Flooring suppliers are aware of the requirements and challenges for recycling carpets and return to our stand for advice as their waste volumes increase.
“Larger firms, in particular, are now in a position to consider putting in a ‘carpet crusher’, supplied by our member Kenburn Waste Management, to compact carpet waste. This brings down the costs associated with transporting it and makes recycling feasible.”
There are plenty of opportunities to save money, as firms paying over £700 per month for carpet waste disposal can benefit from this.
Furthermore, if carpets are segregated and baled, savings of up to 30% are possible and these reductions will all add up.
On-going support from its core funders, Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/Headlam, DESSO, ege, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings is helping CRUK to create solutions for the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet in the UK every year.
Landfill diversion of carpets has increased from 2% to 35% over the past nine years, with targets to get that to 60% by 2020.
Laurence Bird added that interest in carpet recycling and reuse continues to grow and enquiries from all organisation are open regarding solutions for dealing with waste carpet.
