Durapipe has provided the pipework to provide hot and cold water to students in Durham, as part of a major new £20m accommodation scheme.
Featuring a total of 418 individual student bedrooms across the two buildings, the development of Sheraton Park also saw a reception, communal rooms, management facilities and laundry services all delivered.
All 418 room pods, as well as shared kitchen and toilet areas, were manufactured 0ff-site, helping to offer substantial time savings.
Durapipe HTA, in sizes up to 110mm was installed for the main service riser, was selected, as each pod needed to be connected to the water mains on site.
The main service riser transfers water from the main storage tank in the basement plant room to the corridor runs on each floor, before dropping down to feed each individual room.
Confined corridor space meant that the thermal expansion of the pipe system became a major consideration for contractors H Malone and so the installers worked closely with Durapipe’s technical team to design a network configuration that allowed for the expected movement.
Durapipe HTA also offered additional security as it eradicates the risk of metal thefts from site.
Graham Wade from H Malone commented: “This project had a strict time frame so it was important for us to be working with a pipework system that offered us a quick and simple install process and HTA provided the ideal solution.
“We did need to factor in thermal expansion with the system but Durapipe’s technical team was very helpful in assisting us with the designs to ensure this was catered for accurately.”
Durapipe HTA is a C-PVC pipework system specifically designed for domestic hot and cold water services. Its lightweight nature, together with its quick and easy solvent weld jointing technique, offers significant cost savings when compared with copper alternatives.
HTA’s corrosion and limescale resistant properties also guarantee it upholds its performance over the lifetime of the system, with minimal maintenance requirements.
