Historic hall reaps Aggregate roof rewards

Grandeur has been restored to the roof of a historic hall in Rutland by Aggregate Industries’ Building Products team supplying roofing tiles to the project.

700 square metres of the company’s Bradstone Cotswold tiles were fitted to Ranksborough Hall, a grand house that was built in for Lord Ranksborough in 1893.

The hall and its surrounding 50 acres of parkland are now home to a whole host of exclusive residential and holiday homes, as well as a sited touring park. 

Contractors Rutland Roofing chose Aggregate Industries for the job, who’s task it was to replace the roof’s Collyweston Stone Slate, with the managers requiring a new product that would strongly resemble it.

Aggregate Industries’ Bradstone Cotswold roofing tiles did just that. Having used the Bradstone Cotswold tiles previously, when a small section of the roof was rebuilt, the client knew exactly where to come when it came to replacing the whole roof.

The project took around six months to finish as the roof was replaced in sections, with the tilers working their way around the roof.

The fact it was a heritage building, built more than 100 years ago, meant the Aggregate team working on it would face dilemmas. For starters, only parts could be accessed via the main house when measuring took place.

Therefore, scaffolding was needed to complete the job. Also a uniquely shaped roof meant the team had to cope with plenty of awkward angles.

Sales Director for Aggregate Industries’ Building Products division, Jeremy Lee, commented: “Due to the heritage of this building, aesthetics were critical to ensure new tiles mimicked the existing ones.

“Bradstone Cotswold roofing slates were a logical choice due to their ready availability, excellent resemblance to the in-place natural stone slates, and high recycled material content.”

Viv Sweet, Managing Director at Rutland Roofing, said: “This was an interesting, but challenging job. The nature and size of the roof at Ranksborough Hall meant we needed a roofing supplier who was flexible and Aggregate Industries was just that.

“They made our life easier by allowing us to order the tiles in phases, as and when we completed a section of the roof and moved on to the next. We look forward to working with them again in the future.”

The Bradstone Cotswold roofing tiles are available in a variety of sizes. They are a stone alternative to natural stone slates and are supplied in a full range of lengths and widths, with an authentic appearance.  

Ease of laying and availability allows customers to benefit from a reduction in time and costs often attributed to second-hand material.
