Ian Rogers, Sales Director at Gilberts Blackpool, is calling out to the construction industry, with a particular focus on HVAC design and install teams.
Ian (above photo) talks about how he knows it was recommended by the BIM Working Group in a report to the Government Construction Client Group in 2011 that over the next five years it would support the “push” of the supply side of the industry to enable all players to reach a minimum performance in the area of BIM.
This would have been done by providing standards, guides and training that would support a simple delivery, he says.
Although towards the end of 2017 and in the thick of it, both on public and private projects, he does believe things are joined up.
Gilberts, as a manufacturer of grilles and diffusers, is regularly asked for 3D objects by architects, contractors and consultants for all kind of projects but, he explains, with no clear direction on what format they should be providing as the default, currently following the Government guideline and providing IFC files.
“This works for us as manufactures as like a lot of others, we work in Solidworks, but it does not work for all our customers.” he says.
“I’m told, if we supply an IFC to a company working in REVIT, they draw it again and bin the one we sent! Has REVIT won the BIM version of the VHS/ Betamax war? Is that all we should provide? Has the customer spoken and is the industry now setting the route map?
“So, what if REVIT is now the industry default? If we draw in our part of space, can others manipulate in theirs?”
Ian has welcomed comments, in the hope that a step into the future can be taken together, as 6 years on, he hoped all would be clear and uniform.
However, he jests that it is the construction industry and that probably is too much to ask…
