Selectaglaze solution for Sacrewell Watermill

  • 4 Dec 2017

Selectaglaze has delivered a tailored solution for the Grade II Listed Sacrewell Watermill that has seen eight window units installed throughout, to upgrade it to modern standards.

The primary windows of the watermill, near Wansford, Peterborough, suffered from substantial heat loss because of their age.

Selectaglaze were chosen by Messenger Construction chose to provide a solution which kept the primary windows already in place, but boost their performance thermally and acoustically.

Selectaglaze worked alongside Purcell to design solutions that would compliment the architecture of Sacrewell.

The eight units that were fitted featured across the kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom and corridor of the watermill, with the windows treated with a combination of Series 10 2-pane horizontal sliders and Series 10 3-pane horizontal centre sliders, designed to match the original window’s sightlines.

Toughened safety glass with a low emissivity coating was used in all rooms, which with the existing primary window, achieved a U-value of 1.8, therefore lowering heat loss by approximately three fifths (60%).

As well as this, the installation of secondary glazing ensured a significant reduction in noise entering and leaving the building, due to the windows being individually measured and manufactured to ensure the closest installation possible.

The restoration of this historic building has been an emphatic triumph, with Sacrewell Watermill receiving 2016’s RICS East of England Project of the Year. The mill, which was on Historic England’s ‘At Risk’ register, also won awards in Building Conservation and Tourism and Leisure.
