The Ripon City Quarry, of Aggregate Industries, has become the recipient of The Wildlife Trusts’ prestigious Biodiversity Benchmark award, honouring its dedication to protecting the natural environment.
The quarry, situated on the Boroughbridge Road, has received the nationally renowned standard due to its commitment to biodiversity and responsible land management.
Biodiversity and Restoration Manager at Aggregate Industries, Phil Jackson, commented: “Achieving the Biodiversity Benchmark Award at our Ripon City Quarry was another positive step in achieving our biodiversity commitments to the business.
“Aggregate Industries takes biodiversity very seriously, as it recognises the role it plays in protecting, restoring and enhancing habitats and species on and around our sites.
“It is therefore incredibly rewarding to receive the Biodiversity Benchmark which, while hardwork and time-consuming, is the ultimate testament to our commitments. Of course though, the hard work doesn’t stop here and we’ll continue to hone and improve our efforts as we go forward.
“Situated in North Yorkshire, we are now working toward the final restoration of this quarry, creating some fantastic reedbed habitats.
Northern Regional Manager for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Jonathan Leadley, commented: “Aggregate Industries is a business where biodiversity isn’t seen as a ‘tick in the box’ but is a sentiment which is echoed within the very core, culture of the business and its people.
“The Ripon City team have done a tremendous job of elevating their biodiversity programme to ensure the vast variety of wildlife that share their home are kept safe from harm and able to thrive. We’re thrilled to bestow them with this much-deserved award.”
Once restoration is finished, 2019 will see the Ripon City Quarry given over to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, where it will be managed as a nature reserve.
