Shared learning in Perth made possible by Knauf AMF

  • 4 Jan 2018

Ceilings from Knauf AMF have been fitted throughout Alyth Primary in Perthshire, as part of a multi-million pound renovation that has united the nursery, primary and community areas.

The mantra of ‘shared learning’ is at the core, which is showcased through open-plan classrooms, break-out areas and a terrace which extends from the first-floor library to overlook the central courtyard.

To guarantee this enterprising layout was acoustically adequate, Knauf AMF’s Heradesign® and Thermatex® ceilings were selected, thus enabling standards required by BB93 Acoustic Design of Schools to be achieved.

Heradesign®, which featured in the classrooms, gym hall and corridors. was essential in creating a positive ambience

It was specified by JM Architects Associate Craig Tait and here, he explains the reasoning behind his decision: “We were initially attracted to the natural appearance of Heradesign® and the relationship it has with the timber linings elsewhere in the design,” he said.

“Its neutral colour adds a feeling of warmth to the interiors of the school.”

Heradesign® is a high-performance acoustic ceiling and wall absorber range that features visible wood fibres, giving it a distinctive, woven surface which can be produced in any colour. The fact its sound absorption is superb means it is ideal for buildings like school, with its Class A1 impact resistance and high fire safety rating further attractive factors.

Quality sound absorptions means clear teacher to pupil communication can take place, whilst high impact performance of Heradesign® is of benefit to the gymnasium, as it is durable and strong, so can withstand heavy- impact ball games.

Thermatex® Alpha One ceilings have been installed in the school’s circulation spaces. The ceiling’s high light reflectance (88%) optimises all sources of light, producing an even spread. Spectacular sound absorption and sound insulation is assured, meaning footstep noise and voices do not distrupt lesson time in the neighbouring classrooms.

Thermatex® Aquatec is an ideal choice for the kitchens, as a ceiling that can face high-humidity is needed. The ceiling will retain its shape, even in temperatures up to 40°C and the smooth white surface of the ceiling can be cleaned simply. Thermatex® Aquatec can be manufactured with a hygienic coating that is resistant to bacteria and fungi growth, which equals high levels of hygiene and cleanliness, pivotal for a kitchen environment.
