A recent first aid survey by Bull Products, which focussed on the issue within the construction industry, has shown nearly 30% of workers have never been given first aid training.
The manufacturer of life-saving fire protection equipment hoped that the outcome would see more preventative measures put in place by companies to guarantee increased site safety throughout the year.
The survey received a nationwide response, with participants having jobs that include health and safety managers/officers, site managers and supervisors.
Furthermore, also revealed was that over 50% of employees had been given no defibrillator training, whilst 38% went as far as saying there was no defibrillator on site.
A director at Bull Products, Bradley Markham, said there were 114,000 reportable workplace injuries per year, with the construction industry continuing to account for many fatal injuries.
He says that an employer must make sure first aid equipment is on site, with adequate training for workers and having first aiders on hand to deal with injuries also vital.
Fully trained employees will be able to notice any possible hazards and what to do in an emergency – often the difference between an injury being minor or fatal.
In regards to construction workers facing dangers from electric hazards and falls from height, Bradley believed protection through defibrillators has to be provided.
“Although having a defibrillator on site is not currently enforced by law, almost half of all causalities are resuscitated with a defibrillator, and with every minute delay, a casualty’s chance of survival decreases by 10%. It’s equally important to ensure staff are fully trained on how to use and maintain deliberator equipment,” he said.
