Highflying Kalwall for Indiana airport extension

  • 2 Feb 2018

Kalwall® translucent cladding has featured in the recently finished 4,200 square metre extension at the South Bend Regional Airport in Indiana.

The new terminal consists of five gates, plus restaurants, gift shops and break-out areas; all of which are under an architecturally exposed, steel-framed barrel vault structure that mimics the structure of an aircraft wing.

This is covered with a curved Kalwall Skyroof®, measuring 10 metres wide and 180 metres long.

As passengers exit the dark and somewhat dingy TSA screening area, they receive an enlightening welcome, thanks to the natural daylight that enters, with uninterrupted views across the runways.

Kalwall eradicates shadows, glare and the stark contrasts of light and shade. Furthermore, the system eliminates the need for blinds, curtains or solar control and even on cloudier days, the interior is adorned with natural daylight, which means less artificial lighting is needed.

Furthermore, the fact Kalwall is highly insulating means energy costs are reduced.

Kalwall provides a neat, inexpensive solution that also offers complete line-of-sight protection, being extremely vandal and impact resistant and, unlike glass, splintering and serious injury are vastly reduced in the event of an explosion as Kalwall is shatterproof.
