The best accessibility options as standard from Closomat

  • 8 Feb 2018

Closomat sales director, Mark Sadler, has been reflecting on the recent update of a standard to toilet accessibility in public buildings.

The revision applies to BS8300; the Standard for inclusive building design and accessible toilet provision, with focus on Changing Places supplementary assisted accessible toilets. The latest version, BS8300: 2018, affects the specification of these facilities.

The Standard requirements are a 3m x 4m room, plus a conventional wheelchair accessible toilet, featuring a peninsular WC, washbasin, adult-sized height adjustable changing bench, ceiling track hoist and privacy screen.

A wash & dry toilet, as opposed to a conventional WC, can guarantee greater independence and dignity for those using it. It eradicates for both user or carer to wipe with toilet tissue.

“Specifiers need to consider that any fixtures in public environments are subjected to greater usage and strains than in domestic scenarios,” said Mark.

“Whatever equipment is chosen, it needs to be robust enough to withstand such usage and simple to use, so everyone can understand how to operate it, and that operating devices cannot get lost, dropped and damaged.”
