Gilberts‘ Mistrale Fusion System (MFS) has been chosen as a ‘one-stop shop’ solution for the ventilation of a series of new-builds and refurbishments in the education sector.
Gilberts’ MFS is a primarily natural ventilation solution that has evolved into a dynamic hybrid, minimising heat loss via low power fan and mixing damper rather than the conventional heat exchanger.
The system offers flexibility for projects as it can easily be tailored to any specific requirements. The modular design enables airflow, temperature, CO2, and pollutants to be precisely matched to specification, whether integrated into the building via facade, window or roof. In addition, further flexibility is offered by Gilberts’ ability to design solutions in-house, offering bespoke solutions for the core system.
Therefore, when it came to refurbishing the Elliott Hudson College in Leeds, BAM construction used 2no standards MFS128 and 21no. high capacity MFS256 units with heating coils, integrated into the classroom windows, with Gilberts’ window-mounted up/down louvre on the external facade.
Gilberts ensured the fit was airtight by specially engineering a duct extension/transition piece to accommodate the building’s existing facade which is angled 6º from the vertical.
The project also utilised 10no MFS-V roof-mounted units with heat coils, six for the main hall, and two each for the fitness studio.
BAM Construction senior project services engineer Gavin Wilcox explains: “Natural ventilation is the preferred option under EFA guidance. Our design team proposed Gilberts’ MFS as a commercially viable alternative to other schemes, providing intake and extract in one ‘stand-alone’ box.”
“There’s nothing else like it on the market,” comments Gilberts’ Technical Director Roy Jones.
“BAM Construction is just one of many companies appreciating how the concept delivers a commercially viable, sustainable alternative to the conventional means of ventilating a building.”
