Alumasc Blackdown has announced two of its sustainable and innovative green roof projects have been award nominated for this year’s NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) Awards. Here is a look at these impressive projects…
The first project is Monmouthshire-based ‘The Decoy Bunker’ (below image). The original bunker was built in 1941 and designed as a special decoy target for German bombers.
You can read more about that project here – http://www.buildingtalk.com/wwii-bunker-turns-holiday-home-thanks-to-alumasc-blackdown-protection/
The secluded bunker has now undergone a full restoration and is now a unique holiday home.
The bunker needed to blend seamlessly into the hillside, so a very durable waterproofing system was sought after, which could offer complete protection from the water travelling down from the landscape.
A green roof waterproofing solution provided a supreme blending effect that gave it the desired ‘camouflage’ effect by using the existing soil and grass.
Blackdown Greenroof Drainage Layers, Intensive Substrate and Washed Pebble Ballast was installed to finish the green roof.
With Derbigum system holding 40 year durability certification with the BBA (British Board of Agrément) – a Derbigum Black Anti-Root Built-Up System was the perfect solution.
It sits below the green roof, providing a reliable waterproofing solution and guaranteeing peace of mind for the future. Alumasc’s Registered Contractors Span Roofing carried out the installation with terrific results.
The second project was the sedum NatureRoof at the Chester Bus Interchange site (top image); a £10 million ‘key enabling’ project which was part of the £300m Chester Northgate Redevelopment.
The bus interchange can handle 156 bus movements every hour, with the project seeing Blackdown work with Lakesmere, who installed the Kalzip roof, and main contractor Graham Construction.
The project has a 3,434 square metres of sedum NatureMat roof, with a varied pitch from 0-35 degrees installed over a Kalzip standing seam roof.
