Bespoke Harmer design for state-of-the-art building

Harmer Building Drainage has recently featured in Norwich’s new state-of-the-art Quadram Institute building.

The new building, which is set to be completed by the middle of this year, will contain the Institute’s food and health research centre.

Originally, Harmer’s standard Modular 120 stainless steel channel drainage was specified for the inside of the building and standard Modulock drainage for the outside.

However, a bespoke solution soon became desired, in order to cope with the site’s space restrictions and the lengths of channel needed.

This saw the specification altered to a custom-made system, including terrace slot channels.

Harmer, who are a part of Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS), provided technical drawings and technical support, as well as regular site visits, which were a vital part of the project.

AWMS’ Areas Sales Manager Rolf Vollet commented: “The project became a build as you go – which we were able to do with ease as almost all our projects have a bespoke element.

“As well as the terrace slot channels we supplied bespoke stainless steel channels and oversaw the approval process. The drainage was designed and manufactured to suit the location, so it was a perfect fit.”

Modular 120 is designed to drain high volumes of water and waste, perfect for use in instances such as food production and processing, professional kitchens, breweries, and retail.

Modulock is an extremely versatile linear drainage system for the control of rainwater run-off at access points into a building.

It is used to protect structures where a building meets a hard surface, such as a door meeting a concrete floor. Modulock also eliminates the risk of surface water ponding, which eradicates the danger of freeze and thawing, which could damage the building.

Terrace slot channels allow for drainage on two levels’ the floor covering and the underlying base plate, and are useful for managing run-off water from terraces and gardens.
