Vulcathene from Durapipe top of the class at Midlands school

As part of a £20m rebuild of a Midlands secondary school, Durapipe‘s Vulcathene chemical drainage pipework system has featured in state-of-the-art science laboratories.

The construction of the new 11,700 square metre Plantsbrook School is part of a wider scheme encompassing eight Midlands schools; this particular project has seen a new three story teaching block built to house classrooms and studios for science, computing, dance and design subjects.

The 12 new science laboratories saw mechanical and electrical contractor, Dodd Group, tasked with specifying a reliable chemical drainage pipework system for them.

Due to previous uses with the system, Dodd Group chose the Vulcathene chemical drainage system.

With the objective to move chemical waste from the sinks in the science laboratories through to the school’s foul waste drainage system, Vulcathene Mechanical was fitted for all the low level stacks, where fused joints were not required, with Vulcathene Enfusion used for all risers and high level stacks.

As this part of the pipework was to be boxed in, it subsequently made access to the pipework difficult after the project was finished; therefore, it was vital a secure joint was made to stand the test of time.

The timescale was all important throughout, as the fit out had to be finished in time for the beginning of the new school term.

The lightweight nature of Vulcathene means it can be handled easily on site and this, combined with the speedy and facile installation process, saw installation time on site dramatically reduced.

Stuart Rencher from Dodd Group, said: “Due to the large quantities of chemicals being used in the laboratories, and with such high concentrations, we needed to be confident we were installing a safe solution.

“We have used Vulcathene on previous projects and, with a proven track record for laboratory drainage within education environments, it was the ideal solution.”

Experiments in science laboratories can lead to unknown combinations of chemicals being created, so it is essential the drainage system can safely transport any chemical concoctions.
