Forticrete urges builders to consider alternative specification

  • 2 May 2018

Forticrete, part of Ibstock plc, is urging builders not to forget about alternatives to traditional building materials, following research by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), which highlighted rising prices.

The FMB found price rises were squeezing margins, meaning builders were forced to pass the increase onto consumers.

Forticrete’s Roofing Product Manager Rachael Appleyard says a range of roofing solutions exist which mirror the visual appearance of natural slate, whilst offering a more competitive price point, something which builders should not forget about.

She commented: “It is well documented that builders are face lengthy waits due to shortages of popular building materials and that prices are rising, as highlighted by the latest research by the Federation of Master Builders.

“With this in mind, we’re actively encouraging builders to look at the alternatives to traditional building materials, such as slate roof tiles.

“Roof tiles that are formed of concrete, such as our Hardrow Roof Slates, provide an aesthetically pleasing solution but have virtually the same architectural properties as natural stone or slate.

“Not only are they a more cost-effective solution but they also make the build process quicker. As an example of this, our SL8 large format concrete roofing tile has an innovative design that provides greater coverage than the more traditional products on the market. It requires just eight tiles per square metre compared to the 10 tiles per square metre needed for many alternatives.

“By considering materials that are a sustainable, durable and cost-effective alternative to products which are increasing in price or have lengthy delays, it provides a win-win for everyone in the supply chain.”
