Pupils’ pivotal design role at Somerset school with Dulux

  • 11 May 2018

A new £1.3m Business Studies and Computing facility at Churchill Academy & Sixth Form in North Somerset has received design help from pupils, thanks to Dulux Smarter Spaces.

A group of year 9s were directly involved in the state-of-the-art building’s interior design, assisted by the Dulux Smarter Spaces initiative, creating an inspirational educational environment.

The completion of the school’s business and computing suite is only the first of a two phase, £5.2m revamp.

Dulux oversaw the internal decoration process of the purpose-built space throughout, which created seven extra classrooms and three offices.

Pupils experienced a bespoke colour training session, with lessons on the colour wheel, relationships between colours and how colour schemes are created.

Two colour schemes were developed and voted for by the pupils at Churchill Academy, with the scheme labelled ‘bright and exciting’ proving victorious. This vote created a greater sense of connection between the pupils and their learning environment and made them leave their legacy on the school, according to headteacher Chris Hildrew.

Each classroom was adored with a bright and colourful teaching wall, with additional colours chosen to complement the scheme; Dulux Trade products being specified due to their ease of maintenance.

Upon the project being finished, the school received a visit from Lewis, the famous Dulux dog!

Yusuf Alharrari, Dulux Trade’s project lead, said pupils were involved from start to finish, understanding the whole process before selecting the colour palette for each room, which made the project especially unique, as the pupils contributed to all levels of the design process.

Headteacher Chris said he was ‘really thrilled’ with the end product: “It’s spacious, modern and everything we had hoped for.

“We’re looking forward to phase two, which will see a brand new science and technology building with 12 labs and 2 catering kitchens for our students.”

Dulux works with schools nationwide to design inspirational, inspiring learning spaces that meet the needs of the busy school environment.

Dulux Smarter Spaces decoration and design packages are tailored to a school’s needs, offering services for all budgets.

The concept of learner-led design helps schools thrive, based on the belief that a colourful and vibrant space can help inspire both teachers and pupils.

No matter what the size the project proposal is, Dulux Smarter Spaces encourages schools across the UK to open a free Schools Account at their local Dulux Decorator Centre, which offers benefits including discounts on the best decorating products, free same-day delivery, helpful advice and support from Dulux’s in-store experts.
