A complementary use of brick and tile with Ketley Brick

Stamford Hill, a mixture of residential apartments, office and retail units in North London, features a combination of Ketley bricks and Dreadnought roof tiles, creating a contemporary design.

Planning consent was originally obtained by Stockwool Architects, who’s goal it was to transform the unattractive commercial premises into a modern development, taking inspiration from some elements of the area’s existing buildings.

The residential buildings define the character of Stamford Hill, dating from the interwar period, feature simple red brick facades with steep pantiled roofs and distinctive chimneys.

The new scheme was designed so the clay roof transitioned effortlessly into the brickwork of the walls; this was achieved by using Ketley Brown Brindle facing bricks for the walls and matching Blue Brindle clay tiles from Dreadnought for the roof.

Large bay window balcony frames were also included, which project from the smooth, clean rooflines to break up the roof form and echo features of the neighbouring buildings.

The result is a highly contemporary scheme, which fits in nicely with the built environment.

Stockwool Architects commented: “The choice of high quality wall and roof materials and their clear specification within the planning documents did much to convince the London Borough of Hackney’s Planning Department that a contemporary building would be appropriate in this location.”
