A multi-let property situated in Cannon Street, London’s financial district, has seen its acoustic insulation improved through secondary glazing from Selectaglaze.
Clad in Portland stone, this historic office building has recently been transformed, with the frontage of Sherborne House benefitting from the addition of a new entrance, canopy, and newly cleaned stonework.
The design for the office space on the second floor was open plan and a major issue was the ingress of the outside noise from one of London’s busiest roads.
Offices like Sherborne House are typically located close to transport links and in busy areas where outside noise levels are high; the suggested ambient noise level in a meeting room is 35-40dB and a cell office 40-50dB, whereas outside street noise levels can be 70-80dB.
When a cavity of at least 100mm exists between the primary and secondary glazing, a reduction of 45dB is attainable. An extra bonus of secondary glazing is thermal retention; with the use of high performance twin seals, it practically eradicates unwanted drafts and a U-value of 1.8 is possible.
Twenty1 Construction approached Selectaglaze, who provided a solution to improve the acoustic insulation of the existing, irreplaceable primary windows.
Secondary glazing is an ideal solution to significantly reduce noise levels and is renowned for its thermal efficiency.
All the original openings were remodelled, including the relining of the reveals and removal of the old heating system.
Once the building works were completed, a survey was undertaken for 17 new secondary glazing units from the slimline range.
Both series 10 horizontal sliding and series 20 vertical sliding units were used, each being surveyed and manufactured for a specific opening to ensure a perfect fit to achieve the desired performance.
The results of this projects were deemed fantastic overall, with particular praise heaped on the sub-lights on the front elevation and the four full radius headed vertical sliders on the rear, with the space now looking modern and fresh.
The newly refurbished second floor offices are now a perfect environment to house a new occupier, thanks to Selectaglaze’s soundproofing.
