Peel Ports, the second largest ports group in the UK, has finished its £400m three year project, Liverpool 2; it features Gatic Slotdrain for the pavement areas and Gatic’s access covers for a sealed solution to chamber access.
The project, which saw the Gatic products specified by Contractor Bam Nuttall Ltd, involved expanding the Royal Seaforth Dock Container Terminal at the UK’s largest transatlantic port to create one of the continent’s most advanced container terminals.
Liverpool 2 is now one of the most operationally efficient and modern terminals in Northern Europe, handling the largest container ships bringing goods destined for Europe and the US from the Far East.
Traffic at the dockside will be heavy, with numerous lorry movements a day and a maximum lorry weight of 44 tonnes meaning any component of the road surface has to be tough enough to survive the extreme weight; this led to Ultraslot, from Gatic’s Slotdrain range, being chosen to drain the wharf and paved areas.
UltraSlot was created for use in areas subject to constant traffic, i.e. airports, ports and areas with heavy-duty vehicles.
When correctly installed with sufficient depth of concrete cover over the main body of the channel, it will withstand ultra heavy-duty loads, up to F900. Furthermore, Gatic access covers are also able to take up to F900 loads.
Peel Ports, owner of Liverpool 2, has a committment to protecting the environment.
The new facility, which will take millions of miles out of freight logistics, was constructed using the greenest materials and methods available.
Therefore, it makes sense to use environmentally friendly products wherever possible; Gatic Slotdrain is ideal for this, as a significant proportion of the raw materials used in the making it come from recycled sources.
It is mechanically assembled, which means no welding and minimises energy usage in the manufacturing process, and it’s manufactured from sheet steel which is 100% recyclable, making Slotdrain the ideal choice for the project.
