Crown colours communities

Crown Paints has recently been on a mission to help communities become more colourful by donating to charities and community projects.

From its Hull-based manufacturing facility and via Nimtech, a social enterprise based at Crown Paints’ HQ which aims to reduce waste and promote recycling and re-using.

Crown donated 30 litres of paint plus sundries to Headway Bristol, a charity dedicated to helping survivors of brain injuries live as independently as possible. The donation enabled the charity to redecorate the reception area at its Winterbourne premises, refreshing the space and welcoming those who require support from the charity.

Clio Khan, fundraising and events coordinator at Headway Bristol, said: “The donation from Mike and his team at the Bristol Crown Decorating Centre not only saved us a lot of money, it has helped us transform the reception into a welcoming and pleasant space for the people who rely on our services.”

Crown Paints also played a large part in helping to transform an industrialised part of Hull into a vibrant street art gallery – the Bankside Gallery. When Banksy’s famous artwork appeared in Hull in 2017 it inspired street art pioneers Kain and Ollie Marshall of Spray Creative and the BBC’s David Harrison to start the initiative. Crown Paints’ Hull factory is at the heart of the Bankside area and is supporting the project by donating hundreds of litres of paint. The Bankside Gallery artists use the donated paint to create the blank canvas for the finished artworks, and sometimes the basic background shapes and colours.

The BBC’s David Harrison, who also played a large part in the project, comments: “The whole Bankside Gallery initiative is run by volunteers, so being given such a large quantity of paint for free allowed us to create bigger and better artworks and make the Gallery into a landmark attraction in the city. By being able to provide paint supplied by Crown it took away barriers to painting for many people, some of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

In addition, Nimtech, the social enterprise based out of Crown Paints’ Darwen HQ, donated 60 litres of white masonry paint to the Clitheroe Rotary Club to help repaint the town’s Castle Bandstand. The Rotarian volunteers cleaned and repainted the edging of the amphitheatre-style concrete seating around it to improve health and safety of the public seated in the amphitheatre, especially as dusk descends. 

Sandy Morrison, president of the Clitheroe Rotary Club, said: “We are really appreciative of the paint donated by Crown and Nimtech. As a charitable organisation, having the paint donated meant that we can allocate funds we would have spent on materials to other worthy causes, and the repainted bandstand and seating looks fantastic too.”
