A £20m project that is expanding research activities at the University of Melbourne has seen Durapipe‘s Vulcathene Chemical Drainage features extensively in the building’s new laboratories.
The Bio21 Stage 2B Project is a new state-of-the-art facility that will expand the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute’s multidisciplinary research in biotechnology and the life sciences fields.
It is thought roughly 140 additional students and scientists will benefit from the new building, which will offer a unique environment to bring together school, industry and research.
At approximately 5100 square metres, the facility will feature several research laboratories across four floors; therefore, a reliable pipework system was needed for the chemical drainage requirements.
Available in sizes from 38mm – 152mm, Vulcathene is a purpose designed chemical drainage system available in two easy jointing methods; Mechanical for demountable joints and Enfusion for welded joints, offering complete flexibility for designers and installers of chemical waste systems.
Having had previous experience of Vulcathene, consultants Rimmington and Associates specified the Vulcathene Chemical Drainage pipework system to meet the exacting laboratory standards for this project.
Supplied by specialist plastic pipe suppliers Vinidex, an extensive range of Vulcathene Enfusion pipe and fittings, ranging in sizes from 38mm up to 102mm, has been fitted across the four floors to transport chemical waste from each individual sink in every laboratory, through to the building’s main drainage system for disposal off site.
Tom Rimmington, of Rimmington and Associates, commented: “With the large numbers of laboratories on this project, we needed to be confident we were installing a reliable system that would meet the performance needs.
“Vulcathene has proven to perform to exceptional standards in similar facilities across the world, so was the natural choice for this project.”
Experiments in science laboratories can lead to unknown cocktails of chemicals being created, meaning it is vital the drainage system can safely transport said concoctions.
Vulcathene provides educational and research establishments reassurance, with its proven pedigree over many decades in dealing with all manner of chemical waste from laboratories worldwide.
