Air quality and biodiversity has been improved at Chester’s new £13.5 million bus station with the installation of an Alumasc Blackdown green roof system.
The installation comes as part of the £300m Chester Northgate Redevelopment and according to Lakesmere Project Manager Steve Johnson, Alumasc’s Blackdown system was chosen due to the excellent operational performance and valuable environmental benefits.
A 3,434m2 Blackdown Extensive NatureMat roof was laid upon a Kalzip standing seam roof, and then planted with Sedum NatureMat to create a ‘living’ roof. The living roof provides waste diversion, storm water management, moderation of urban heat island effect and improved air quality.
A variable pitch ranging from 0 up to a steep 35 degrees with tapered seams was required for the roof system. Any damage or depression on the profile during install would be clearly visible from within the building as the roof was un-insulated and supported only on purlins.
Lakesmere’s Steve Johnson said the Alumasc Blackdown team helped to deliver a carefully managed, high-quality green roof on time, on budget and with no health & safety incidents.
