Alumasc roofing solution protects sheltered housing in Birmingham

  • 30 Oct 2015

A 10 storey retirement and sheltered housing complex in Bartley Green, Birmingham has been provided with a significant increase to its operational life thanks to the installation of Alumasc’s Euroroof Caltech waterproofing system.

Property of Birmingham City Council, California House is high rise residential block consisting of 42 flats.

The existing mastic asphalt roof system featured minimal thermal insulation, and after multiple repairs it had become heavily compromised.

Alumasc and its West Midlands-based contractor Brindley Asphalt were chosen to install a new roof waterproofing system on the 405m2 roof area to provide a long-term solution.

Euroroof Caltech system

The existing, and now degraded, waterproofing system was removed entirely and replaced by a new, fully integrated Alumasc system.

After contractor Brindley Asphalt laid a Euroroof vapour barrier – offering immediate protection to the fully occupied residence – a fully engineered Derbifoam thermal insulation scheme was then installed.

This provided the optimum U-value of 0.18 W/m2Kd and removes standing water to the existing RWO locations. The internal rain water outlet locations were fully refurbished with the Euroroof Refurb Pro outlets.

Last of all, the contractor installed the Euroroof Caltech waterproofing system in a flame free and cold applied manner, comprising a Caltech base coat with reinforcement layer and two applications of the Caltech Top Coat. The system achieves a 25-year warranty.

The Euroroof Caltech system was used to fully encapsulate the perimeter parapet details. An Alumasc Skyline Aluminium PPC capping finish was then added in the selected RAL colour.

The solution was completed with the installation of defined walkways, which were finished in the Euroroof Caltech Aggregated wear course.
