ASSA ABLOY: DesignEuropa Awards shortlist highlights the importance of access control product design

  • 29 Oct 2021

Once again, ASSA ABLOY’s Aperio® H100 Wireless Handle receives recognition from a prestigious prize jury for its design and security functionality. As electronic access control becomes part of daily life in almost every modern building, the roles of product design and integration with architectural features grow more prominent.

Every two years the prestigious DesignEuropa Awards select products across the spectrum of industrial design. These awards are sponsored by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which protects and promotes the intellectual property of EU organisations.

A jury of 12 experts in design, business and intellectual property — led by Päivi Tahkokallio, Finnish designer and President of the Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA) — considers products for their aesthetic value and visual appeal; demonstrable impact on the market; and management of design and other intellectual property rights.

ASSA ABLOY’s Aperio H100 was one of four finalists in the ‘Industry’ category, alongside products from fellow industrial design leaders Phillips, John Deere and Talent.

This latest recognition for the Aperio H100 follows several award wins since launch. It has previously received Detektor International’s Innovative Achievement Award and the German Design Council’s Iconic Award: Innovative Interior. It was also named Intersec’s Access Control Product of the Year.

Christian Archambeau, Executive Director of EUIPO, comments: “The DesignEuropa Awards are an important opportunity for us to recognise not only the economic and practical impacts of innovative designs, but also their cultural impact.”

Magnus Baeckstrom, Business Unit Director – Wireless Access Control at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA, comments: “The link between design and functionality is at the heart of our recent innovations in access control technology.

“We are delighted that the Aperio H100 was selected above so many potential candidates across the whole landscape of industrial design.”

What makes the Aperio H100 different?

The new Aperio H100 packs the power, flexibility and functionality of wireless access control into a simple door handle. With easy retrofitting on almost any interior door, broad RFID compatibility via an inbuilt credential reader, and simple integration with third-party access systems, the H100 handle makes it cost-effective to bring access control to many more internal doors.

A standard battery fits inside the H100’s slim handle, creating a minimal footprint and a discreet look suited to any door or architectural style. No wiring is needed, making installation easier and aesthetics more elegant.

Like all Aperio wireless locks, the H100 integrates seamlessly with almost any access or security management system, from over 100 different manufacturers, and is compatible with all major RFID credentials, as well as with mobile Bluetooth and NFC keys via Seos®.
