howardchapmanHoward Chapman, Buildingtalk Editor, on why many UK architects, specifiers and other construction industry professionals will be travelling to Paris in November to visit one of the world’s biggest building shows.

BATIMAT 2017

In November I will be travelling to Paris to visit BATIMAT 2017, one of the world’s biggest building shows. It is an enormous event. This year there will be over 1,700 exhibitors – 53% of these are international companies selling across Europe. They expect over 300,000 visitors to the exhibition and 24% will be coming from outside France, including many from the UK.

Many UK based architects, specifiers, technicians and other construction industry professionals will travel to Paris to visit Batimat. For some, getting to Paris is easier than travelling to some UK shows. It is a great opportunity to see new products from around the world – and get to visit a beautiful city!

batimat larger imageI first visited this show a decade ago and was amazed at the size and ambition of the event, not least because at that time UK building industry shows were really struggling.

In 2013, BATIMAT included a conference on the renewal of major cities across the world. London was featured as a prime exemplar city, including new infrastructure and renewal projects. I met with Ken Livingstone who was there to speak about the impact of the London Olympics and its legacy. I also interviewed the Director of the BATIMAT event and learnt about how the success of the show is built around supporting Exhibitors and encouraging them to make the most of the show.

Many of the exhibitions in Europe are thriving and it is important that our British events continue to grow. It is also important to see European shows like BATIMAT as an opportunity to see new products as well as identifying new markets for British building products and services.

Renaissance in UK events

In the UK we are also experiencing something of a renaissance in construction related exhibitions and conferences, including Ecobuild, UK Construction Week, Explore Offsite, and many more. They are very important in showcasing the UK industry both to our own market and as an opportunity to reach out to overseas markets
