Brett Martin specifies Ritchlight and Xlok Ultra for Scottish sports centre

  • 30 May 2017

Brett Martin Daylight Systems’ Ritchlight and Xlok Ultra skylights have been specified to create a light and airy environment for athletes inside Scotland’s new Sports Performance Centre, the Oriam.

Based at Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh campus, the centre accommodates a range of sports facilities, including two sports halls and an indoor synthetic football pitch.

According to Reiach and Hall Architects’ design, the secondary sports hall required a curved roof, with the ability to allow natural light and ventilation into the building. To achieve this, a combination of Brett Martin rooflight systems, designed to maximise daylight and limit heat gain, were specified for installation.

Keyclad was contracted to install a total of 19 Ritchlight Mono pitched rooflights and 120 vented and unvented Xlok Ultra panel glazing systems. Brett Martin devised an opening method across the full bay to enable greater air flow throughout the sports hall.

The vented Ritchlight Mono Glass was fitted in the low roof areas to ensure good acoustic properties and natural ventilation. Vented Richlight Mono Polycarbonate was used in conjunction with Xlok Ultra on the higher level roof, where the same levels of natural ventilation were required on a tighter budget.

For the rooflight areas that required no ventilation, the quick-to-fit Xlok Ultra was specified as a simple solution.

Available in a range of glazing options and runs lengths, Brett Martin’s Ritchlight Mono and Dual pitched skylights can offer a variety of glazing options, and U-values as low as 1.1 W/m2K.
