British Parking Award shortlist IKO following M&S refurb

After refurbishing the deck of a 4,000m² multi-storey car park for Marks and Spencer in Matlock, IKO PLC has been shortlisted for the British Parking Awards.

The installation took just five weeks, with an average of 800m² IKO Permapark mastic asphalt laid per week. IKO PLC was nominated in the Best Car Park Refurbishment category.

CJL of Belfast was appointed main contractor, with Rio Asphalt as the sub-contractor, laying IKO Permapark to refurbish the car park deck at the rear of the store. 

The specially formulated mastic asphalt waterproofing surface system, IKO Permapark, is ideal for elevated vehicle decks, pedestrian walkways and access ramps. In order to achieve long-term durability, it uses advanced polymer technology, increasing fatigue resistance, improving temperature stability and making installation easy.

At the IKO factory in Grangemill, over 90 tonnes of the existing asphalt in the car park was stripped and recycled. In computer-controlled 18-tonne hot charge tankers, the IKO Permapark mastic asphalt was delivered direct from the factory. Then, it was transported to site in 1-tonne Self-Propelled Asphalt Mixers and then Rio Asphalt’s trained installers laid it by hand.

Consequently, the mix is more consistent and so the process delivers a better quality, easier-to-lay asphalt. Furthermore, as there is no secondary heating and melting needed on site, time is reduced, costs are cut and the environment is benefitted. 

The M&S food hall now has a car park that can provide parking for up to 180 vehicles.
