Changing Places campaigner succeeds in equipping farm attraction

  • 8 Apr 2016

A campaigner for special accessible toilets has worked closely with the owners of a popular farm attraction to fit a Changing Places hygiene facility for disabled users.

Longdown Activity Farm is a popular visitor attraction, based in New Forest, Southampton. Like many young children, Sarah Brisdion’s son, Hadley, enjoys visiting the farm, which accommodates alpacas, donkeys, pigs and chicks.

Unfortunately, Hadley suffers from cerebral palsy, which means his trips are often curtailed due to the lack of special accessible toilets and suitable facilities.

To tackle this, Sarah worked alongside the farm owners to develop, raise funds for and equip a toileting solution. Since the commencement of Sarah’s campaign, a former cargo container has been transformed into a Changing Places hygiene facility.

Converted by dedicated members of the community, the container has been fitted out with a WC, privacy screen and a washbasin, as well as a ceiling track hoist and an adult-sized changing bench, which can be adjusted to any height. All equipment was provided by Clos-o-Mat

Changing Places toilets are considered ‘desirable’ in public venues; it is recommended that they are provided in addition to conventional wheelchair-accessible toilets.

By giving users more space and the equipment necessary for their hygiene and personal care, Changing Places allows families with disabled members to enjoy the kinds of days out that others may take for granted.
