Cold Weather Plan for monitoring burst pipes in unattended homes

  • 30 Nov 2015

VPS has re-issued its Cold Weather Plan and published an at-a-glance checklist to help owners of empty premises cut the costs of cold weather damage as temperatures in the UK drop to below zero.

In 2014, over 260,000 claims were made for damage from burst water pipes – the equivalent of one every two minutes of every hour throughout the year.

Anthony Owen, VPS’ Managing Director explains: “When the weather is mild, many landlords turn a blind eye to preparing their properties for ice and snow. It takes a cold snap like we have now to bring more urgency to the issue.”

Checklist

Whilst all properties are at risk from freezing temperatures and heavy snow fall, empty properties are particularly vulnerable as the damage can go unnoticed for days or even weeks.

Slight leaks from even a small burst pipe can release thousands of gallons of water if left unattended, resulting in heft insurance claims averaging from £25,000 to a lofty £100,000 or more for water damage to commercial properties.

Anthony Owen concluded: “Take action now. Prevention really is better than cure, and far more cost effective. Follow the tips in the free VPS guide, and ensure your empty properties are checked and maintained.”

VPS inspectors carry out over 100,000 inspections a year. Download the Cold Weather Plan here.
