Colourful lockers light up leisure – Abet

  • 21 Dec 2020

Abet Laminati recently provided high-pressure laminate for a sophisticated and elegant solution at a newly built leisure centre.

The new leisure centre near Newcastle was built as part of the £42m Ponteland School development by Northumberland County Council.

Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, the leisure centre includes a six-lane 25-metre pool, trainer pool, aqua play, softplay, Clip‘N’Climb café, sports bar, 100 station gym, spinning studio, dance studios and luxury spa.

It was crucial for the facilities to be able to cope with a lot of constant use, with the building being used by both students and the wider community.

It was key for lockers to be able to cope with heavy volume of daily use and to also be easily accessible and manageable for staff. A range of lockers were supplied by Helmsman Lockers & Cubicles, with varying colours, finishes and styles for different zones.

With an in-house design team skilled in assisting specifiers, Helmsman presented an innovative scheme with a mix of three and six compartment lockers. These used blue and white high-pressure laminate from Abet Laminati with some overclad with glass and all complemented with Ojmar OTS locks. This provides a tactile, hardwearing and attractive surface coupled with excellent resistance to impact, scratches and abrasion.

In addition, the intelligent locking system from Ojmar is the user-friendly RFID locking system allowing opening by a wireless bracelet or card which is very intuitive and easy to use. With full management capabilities for servicing and access control, it provides a simple but effective moisture-resistant and hardwearing solution.

The result is stunning, with the mix of glass and laminate providing a sophisticated and elegant solution befitting such an impressive building and also providing the accessibility and management necessary.

Abet’s compact grade high pressure laminates are also a perfect solution for this and similar kinds of applications such as tabletops, vanity units and cubicles.

The compact grade’s solid core construction in 6mm, 10mm or 12mm thickness, makes it a perfect choice for areas prone to high moisture and humidity, such as leisure centres, swimming pools and changing rooms because there is no risk of peeling, cracking or delamination. They are fully self-supporting and easy to work with for cutting and fabrication.

As with all Abet Laminati Collections, the laminates meet or exceed all European and British performance standards for resistance to wear, heat, moisture, impact and scratching. In addition, they are widely used in situations where high quality performance and design can be carefully crafted together to create an attractive visual experience.
