Community Centre offers Changing Places assisted accessible toilet

  • 13 Feb 2017

East West Community Centre, in Leicester, is the only community centre to offer a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet, provided by Clos-o-Mat, Britain’s biggest provider of fully accessible toilets, in domestic environments and ‘away from home’.

The room has 12m2 of space, with a ceiling track hoist, peninsular toilet, height-adjustable washbasin and adult-sized changing bench, supplied by Clos-o-Mat, Britain’s leading provider of such facilities and installed by F Stimpson (Leicester).

Leicester City Council funded the refurbishment and modelling of the building, in order to accommodate the space on the ground floor, and give unimpeded, level access and consequently, was shortlisted for a regional design award.

Manager, Ushma Mehta, says the facilities have attracted many people from the local community as the spacious and modern toilet and hoist facility has made the centre more inclusive.

He explained that people who otherwise would be house bound and isolated can come and enjoy time here and socialise, with services such as Day Care, Women’s Group, Exercise Sessions and Luncheon Club.

“Without toilet facilities like this, many people feel that they can’t go out, because they need extra space, or lifting, or have continence issues,” explained Kelvin Grimes, Clos-o-Mat assisted accessible toilet project manager.

A Changing Places toilet is ‘desirable’ in buildings to which numbers of the public have access, and is in addition to conventional wheelchair accessible toilers, under latest Building Regulations and good practice guidelines. Nearly 900 have been opened throughout the UK since their introduction a decade ago.

Its ability to deliver- in-house- design advice, supply installation, commissioning, project management and maintenance across the ambit of accessible toiling equipment, including the Clos-o-Mat wash and dry toilet, makes Clos-o-Mat unique.
