Compost bin and modular roof tile designs win Recofloor award

  • 6 Nov 2014

The two winning group submissions will each receive a andpound;500 prize and one will get the chance to work alongside flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to produce a prototype of their winning products.

Launched in March by the national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, the competition aimed to find an innovative product that will increase the market options for post-consumer vinyl flooring.

Uplifted flooring is most commonly transformed into traffic cones and other road calming products due to the high levels of screed and scrim contamination on the material.

Developing ways to recycle vinyl flooring

More than 40,000 tonnes of vinyl flooring waste currently arises each year in the UK and Recofloor is working towards identifying and developing new applications that can accept more types of material and utilise its properties.

Ideas from the students included a plant pot, bicycle helmet, relief shelter and a survival tool, with the overall winners set to receive their prizes at the annual Recofloor Awards event in March 2015.

Recofloor hopes to combine the technical knowledge of the flooring and recycling industries with the design expertise of the students to progress its work and come up with further ways to encourage recycling.
