Schluter-Systems’ range of waterproofing and drainage products have been used in the conversion of a Grade II listed former tobacco factory in a £50 million development of eco homes.
The new Lakeshore complex in Bristol was once the home of Imperial Tobacco, sat on a unique plot on its own lake.
Offering 400 luxury apartments and commercial space, the development boasts modern living within 10 acres of green landscape, incorporating various eco-friendly features.
During the factory’s conversion, the project specified the installation of a roof top terrace that offered a high standard of protection and waterproofing.
A range of Schlüter-Systems products were used to offer high durability and a safe waterproof surface.
Lakeshore’s large roof terrace required waterproofing, an effective drainage system and proper preparation.
To guarantee this, Schlüter-KERDI-COLL, Schlüter-KERDI and Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN were installed.
Developed as a waterproofing membrane, Schlüter-KERDI comprises of soft polyethylene and is covered on both sides with a special fleece webbing. This is used to anchor the membrane in thin-set mortar.
Tiles can be installed directly onto Schlüter-KERDI using a thin-bed method and Schlüter-KERDI-COLL is suitable for adhering and sealing overlaps of Schlüter-KERDI membranes.
However, at Lakeshore the product was used as a protection layer, with Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN installed over it.
Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN was also utilised as an additional protective layer for the assembly, designed for use within thin-bed ceramic and stone tile assemblies in exterior applications.
Typically installed over the Schlüter KERDI bonded waterproofing membrane, it is a safe and effective passive capillary drainage system.
Carl Stokes, Head of Marketing and Customer Service, commented: “As demonstrated with Lakeshore, Schlüter-Systems offers designers and contractors everything for the complete assembly of balconies, ground level terraces and roof terraces, from a single source.
Ranging from area drainage to bonded waterproofing assemblies, uncoupling, edge profiles and gutters, no other manufacturer offers such an extensive and truly reputable range of products.”

The key is to tender using Tobermore’s Secura modular concrete block retaining walls rather than the default masonry specification & the Secura Portal, an online tool.
