A new school in rural Aberdeenshire has been constructed using ROCKPANEL Woods and ROCKPANEL Rockclad boards to create unique façade depicting local fauna and Pictish culture.
Built by Morrison Construction, Midmill Primary School is Kintore’s second primary school, developed to ease the burden of a growing population by adding capacity for around 540 additional students.
The school is designed with a U-shaped footprint set around a central courtyard. The building is constructed out of timber and clad with ROCKPANEL Woods panels, that are “virtually indistinguishable from real woods” to provide a lively and contemporary aesthetic.
Vibrant ROCKPANEL Rockclad boards were also used in shades of orange, yellow and green at the pupil entrance areas, with each year group given an associated colour. To further engage the students, surface designer Bespoke Atelier was chosen to create a range of art pieces that were engraved into the ROCKPANEL boards.
The boards are manufactured using natural occurring basalt which allows them to be easily engraved without reducing their weather resistance. The routed designs will eventually weather to a deep brown, providing contrast with the intense bold façade colours.
Designer Marion Parola fed back positively after working with the boards. She commented: “We are really pleased with the job and are glad it’s turned out so well. No two projects are the same for us, every design we create is unique; however, the experience in materials is something which is definitely transferable into future jobs and we hope to do much more work with ROCKPANEL in the future.”
ROCKPANEL products contributed towards Midmill Primary Schools BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. The Durable and Durable ProtectPlus boards hold the highest possible A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide.
