FireCurb advanced breather membranes used on WikiHouse 4.0

  • 28 Oct 2014

Built as part of the London Design Festival 2014, WikiHouse is a modular construction system made from SmartPly OSB boards than have been CNC machined into numbered parts and then assembled with wedge and peg connections.

Led by Arup, The Building Centre and 00 Design, the installation was carried out in order to raise awareness of housing issues, the application of new construction solutions and how technology can enable people to build custom-built homes without the need for conventional construction.

Slowing down the spread of fire and flames

FireCurb Housewrap offers superior flame retardant performance with long term weather protection, effective vapour diffusion and a high level of energy efficiency, using innovative technology to reduce the flammability of polymer based substrates and limit or stop the spread of fire through the external envelope.

The membrane solution was fitted behind the fibre cement board façade to seal the timber and provide the structure with maximum protection against fire, climate and condensation.

The DuPont Tyvek FireCurb membrane was installed in under three hours with technical advice from DuPont, with the main part of the building being completed in six days.

The technology incorporates a phosphorous containing agent that forms a char layer at the surface when it comes into contact with an ignition source, resulting in the thin layer of flame retardant carbonised polymer forming a barrier to slow the release of flammable materials.

The 70 square metre structure is a demonstration of how a perfectly assembled wooden frame can provide an air-tight, waterproof and secure property.

FireCurb Housewrap has a fire rating of class B-s1 d0 according to EN13501-1- protecting against flames and producing less smoke in the event of the membrane catching fire.

FireCurb was specified due to its weather tight seal that would enhance the thermal performance and comfort of WikiHouse, allowing the building to last for many years to come.

SWA: A focus on Steel Window Association member West Leigh

Located in Charlton, South London, SWA member West Leigh was established during the Blitz, in 1943. During the destruction in London, the company helped in repairing windows and facades that had been damaged by bombings throughout the city.
