Glidevale Protect offers ventilation guidance for in-roof solar applications

  • 16 Oct 2024

With a growing number of pitched roofs in the UK now featuring solar PV panels, Glidevale Protect is on hand to simplify the process for specifiers looking for the most appropriate combination of roofing underlay and ventilation products.

It is fundamental that in-roof solar applications have the correct ventilation strategy to minimise the risks of condensation. To help specifiers navigate the often conflicting and confusing information available, Glidevale Protect has created a helpful FAQ document which answers some of the most commonly asked ventilation questions when in-roof solar is used.

Glidevale Protect

NHBC Standards

This covers everything from the different type of pitched roofing underlays available to the associated ventilation strategies required for an impermeable roof covering, in accordance with BS 5250, and also the latest NHBC Standards, updated earlier this year.

While technically any type of membrane can be installed on roofs with solar PV panels – whether it’s an air and vapour permeable membrane (LR) like Protect Viking Air, a vapour permeable (LR) membrane such as Protect VP300 and VP400, or an impermeable underlay (HR) like Protect A1 Solar – the important factor is that the ventilation requirements can differ depending on whether it is a warm or cold roof as well as the underlay type that is ultimately chosen.

This is also covered extensively by Glidevale Protect’s FAQ document and its technical team is also on hand to assist further.
