Granada Glazing has treated Hallamshire hospital’s stroke unit in Sheffield with a bespoke secondary glazing solution that provides acoustic, thermal and privacy benefits for patients accessing the city centre facility.
Run by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the highly regarded hyper-acute stroke unit is situated at the multi-storey Royal Hallamshire Hospital, close to Sheffield city centre.
Phase one of the project saw secondary glazing specified to attenuate external noise and increase thermal insulation, improving the overall comfort levels for all patients. Privacy was also a major concern within the large 14-bed bays within Ward L1.
Working to locally based JTP Architects’ specification, Granada Glazing’s horizontal sliding secondary glazing units, finished in white, in two, three and four-panel configurations to line up with the primary windows, feature. Low-E glass enhances thermal performance and achieve a 1.9W/m2K centre pane U-value.
Ensuring privacy and controlling the level of light entering the ward were also key requirements. Granada supplied integral venetian blinds, which were affixed to the secondary system, in the cavity between the primary and secondary glazing.
Protected on both sides by the primary window and secondary glazing, the blind is operated by a room-side thumb-turn mechanism routed through the timber subframe. The result is complete control of privacy and light without the need to open the secondary glazing.
Due to the success of phase one, Granada Glazing have been appointed to supply secondary glazing in Ward L2.
Lewis Black, of JTP Architects, comments: “It’s the first time we had worked with Granada Glazing and their assistance with the technical aspects went very well. The units are unobtrusive and look smart, just how we envisaged they would.
“For the new phase, we consulted Granada on an upgraded specification and between us devised an alternative system using hinged casements.”
Mike Latham of Granada Glazing’s Commercial Sales, comments: “Phase one (Ward L1) was a very successful project – both in terms of the performance and operation of the secondary glazing system – we are pleased to be engaged for the second phase (Ward L2).
“In consultation with the architect, we agreed on an upgraded specification to our Heritage Hinged system to house sealed units within the secondary glazing providing enhanced insulation. This system also provides easy access for cleaning and maintenance.”
Granada Glazing partners with architects and specifiers on the design, manufacture and supply of high quality commercial secondary glazing for all sectors and building types, in the North West and across the UK.
