Granada secondary glazing lowers carbon footprint of historic Museum of London

Derelict market buildings in the Conservation Area of Smithfield, central London have been converted to create a warmer, quieter and more secure environment to house the new Museum of London, thanks to Granada’s secondary glazing. 

The museum, formerly at 150 London Wall in east London, has moved to West Smithfield where it breathes new life into the historic market structures that reflect the working and trading history of the city.

One of the highlights of the Culture Mile, the Museum’s new home in the Grade II listed Poultry Market delivers many more benefits, for many more people, including better street-level access, improved transport links and larger exhibition spaces.

Secondary glazing specialists Granada Glazing designed, manufactured and installed bespoke aluminium secondary glazing to improve the thermal, acoustic and security performance of the original timber single-glazed windows.

Secondary glazing provides additional security benefits due to the extra internal glazing panels providing an extra barrier against unwanted intrusion.

Working with the main contractors Rooff Ltd, Granada Glazing’s technical team devised the optimum secondary glazing solution to solve the key issues of external noise intrusion and preserving warmth in the large interior exhibition areas that are flooded with natural light.

Granada’s involvement

Granada’s team installed 30 secondary glazing units, including some substantial Horizontal and Vertical Sliders and Arched units that follow the shape of the primary windows. A mix of 6mm toughened glass panels and 6.4mm laminated safety glass panels were specified to satisfy the required thermal, safety and security secondary glazing requirements. 

Slimline aluminium frames, in a white powder coated finish, were installed in ground and first-floor exhibition and office spaces that deliver ease of ventilation and access for cleaning and maintenance for the building’s occupants.

Secondary glazing is the proven cost-effective, efficient and discreet solution to cure issues with external noise, thermal efficiency and enhance security in buildings of all ages. When correctly installed, secondary glazing can make buildings 80% quieter by reducing noise levels up to 54dB. Expertly fitted secondary glazing provides a virtually invisible unique barrier that can reduce heat loss by as much as 65% and lower energy bills.
