So what exactly does green roof maintenance involve? Mike Storey, roofing expert at UKFR Roofing & Insulation, shares six key upkeep tips every homeowner should know…
Google searches for ‘how does a green roof work’ have increased by 50% compared to last year, showing that while the benefits of installing one are well-known, fewer people are aware of the maintenance involved once the greenery is in place.
Mike Storey explains: “A green roof isn’t just a ‘fit and forget’ feature. Like any garden, it needs care to stay healthy and effective. With the right maintenance, a green roof can thrive for decades, but neglecting it can lead to poor plant health, drainage issues or even structural damage.”
Here are Mike’s six tips for green roof maintenance…
1. Carry out seasonal inspections
At a minimum, inspect your green roof twice a year, ideally in spring and autumn.
“Look out for signs of plant stress, pooled water, or damage to the waterproof membrane. Regular checks help you spot small problems before they escalate,” Mike comments.
2. Keep drainage outlets clear
Blocked drains can lead to waterlogging, root rot, and added stress on the roof structure.
“Clear leaves, moss, and debris from outlets and gutters during each inspection. It’s a quick task that makes a big difference,” Mike advises.
3. Weed unwanted growth
Even sedum and low-maintenance planting schemes aren’t immune to invasive weeds.
Mike says: “Remove any weeds or self-seeded plants that don’t belong. Left unchecked, these can compete with intended species or damage the roofing layers.”
4. Monitor plant health and replant as needed
Plant coverage may thin out over time, especially during hot, dry spells.
“If certain areas look bare or stressed, consider overseeding or planting hardy replacements to maintain consistent coverage,” Mike recommends.
5. Water during droughts
While most green roofs are designed to be low-maintenance, prolonged dry periods may require occasional watering.
“Pay attention during heatwaves, especially in the first few years after installation, and water sparingly when needed,” Mike says.
6. Check the integrity of the waterproof membrane
While plants and soil protect the roof from UV rays and temperature extremes, the membrane beneath it still needs attention.
Mike says: “If you spot signs of cracking or lifting around the edges, call in a roofing professional to check it out. Prevention is always cheaper than repair.”
