Senior Architectural Systems glazing solution

Historic railway arches transformed with Senior glazing solution

  • 7 Sep 2016

Edinburgh’s derelict Waverly Arches have been revitalised as part of a large-scale restoration project; the glazing was delivered by Senior Architectural Systems

Dating back to 1878, the C-listed railway arches have been boarded up for the past few decades. Union Projects developed a design and build scheme, as part of the wider New Waverley Developments programme, to restore the arches and introduce a new complex of restaurants, bars and shops.

Working in conjunction with Staran Architects, Union Projects delivered a selection of contemporary retail spaces within the arches. Aluminium glazing solutions from Senior Architectural Systems were specified to open up the plots and introduce natural light into the new stores.

Glazing solution

GG Glass and Glazing was contracted to fit the glazing units: each one features Senior’s SF52 aluminium curtain walling, SPW600e windows and SD commercial doors.

As a flexible system, the company’s SF52 curtain walling system was able to meet the rising height requirements of each arch; thus, the glazing units integrate seamlessly into the historic structures.

To complement the industrial heritage of the railway arches further, Senior created a black matt finish for the aluminium frames, by powder coating them at its in-house facility.
