IGU solutions for Loughborough College

IGU solutions specified for Loughborough College refurbishment

  • 28 Oct 2016

Working in conjunction with GLASSOLUTIONS, QAS has provided aluminium curtain walling, ribbon windows and IGUs for use in the refurbishment of Loughborough College.

Architect IBI Taylor Young has worked to remodel the campus buildings, which date back to the 1960s. Inside the refurbished blocks, new science laboratories, learning spaces and IT suites have been installed. It also accommodates 35 renovated classrooms, an office space and living quarters, along with a restaurant and health and fitness facilities.

The £14 million project was managed by Pick Everard; Willmott Dixon served as the main contractor.

Curtain walling

Queniborough Aluminium Services (QAS) was contracted by Willmott Dixon to manufacture and install curtain walling and ribbon windows throughout Loughborough College’s A-block, which spans six floors.

After completing a full survey of the structure, the Leicester-based company provided pre-contract detailing and specification support to develop an effective curtain walling solution.

QAS decided upon using Technal FXI 65 – a thermally-enhanced aluminium system – to create the ribbon windows. It also provided Technal MX curtain walling to the stairwells, offering additional insulation. Automatic entrance doors were fitted, using Tormax 2201 sliding door operators.

IGUs

The company worked with its insulating glass unit (IGU) supply chain partner, GLASSOLUTIONS, to ensure that the building’s energy efficiency credentials were optimised by its glazing specification. A large proportion of the windows featured SGG Securit with SGG Planitherm Ultra N IGU’s; 6.8mm Stadip was used to provide enhanced security in certain areas.

SGG Securit Cool-Lite SKN174 II was used as part of an Argon-filled IGU to offer improved solar control to the windows on the west and south elevations.

GLASSOLUTIONS produced all IGUs for the project at its Peterborough plant, which specialises in developing sealed units for commercial applications.
