Kawneer’s move to chrome-free processes has been recognised at the highest level.
Kawneer used chrome as a typical anti-corrosion prior to powder coating for 25 years but the company has reviewed the practice after a European Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals ban.
Therefore, a six figure investment was made to improve production processes including two new de-mineralisation units, stainless steel lined tanks, laboratory equipment, dedicated storage area for test panels. An earlier than scheduled Interpon D approved applicator audit for 2017 was also warranted.
Auditor Akzo Nobel’s report said “The new levels of process control installed with improved monitoring, analysis, corrective action and communication are commendable and involving staff at all levels gives increased awareness, responsibility and ownership for quality improvement.
In addition, it said that upgrading the laboratory with new test equipment will enhance the already high levels of quality control and capabilities that have been evident over the years of auditing at Kawneer and looking ahead, completing the Qualicoat Approved Applicator Status will improve Kawneer’s reputation even further.
Continuous Improvement Manager for Kawneer, Gareth Jones said the company trialled several chrome-free solutions and picked the one that is best suited to the processes and the nano-technology solution has Qualicoat as well as GSB approval.
The company aims to have the best-in-country pre-treatment plant and systems and indeed, the auditors have ranked its pre-treatments and control systems best-in-class.
