Kooltherm pipe insulation selected for exposed to view Art House application

  • 27 Apr 2016

RDA Insulation Ltd has installed Kingspan Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation in an exposed to view application at the Art House at Somerset College. M&E contractors EIC specified the insulation with a matte, theatre black aluminium foil facing to provide subtle, high quality aesthetics.

When it was originally built in the 1970s, the Art House at Somerset College was the largest purpose built arts college in Europe. It has recently undergone a comprehensive refurbishment and extension programme overseen by BAM Construction.

Building services such as pipework have been left exposed within the interior spaces to provide an industrial aesthetic and to allow ceiling heights to be raised within the existing rooms.

Kingspan Kooltherm FM Pipe Insulation was specified for the project with a pre-applied theatre black facing, specifically designed for exposed to view applications where a non-reflective appearance is needed.

The pipe insulation has an aged thermal conductivity as low as 0.025 W/m·K and a Euroclass Reaction to Fire rating of BL,s1,d0 – the highest level achievable for phenolic insulation. Its thermal and fire performance characteristics have been independently verified by BDA Global, with the system holding BDA Agrement BAP 15-036/01/C.
