Russell Dean, Deputy Divisional Manager, Living Environmental Systems at Mitsubishi Electric has written the following about Scotland’s Carbon Budgets Report, which took place today (21st May)…

“Accelerating heat pump adoption will play a crucial role in achieving Net Zero in Scotland; this is a clear message in the Climate Change Committee’s advice in its Scotland’s Carbon Budgets report released today (21 May). Yet greater certainty from government and industry is needed to make this a reality.

“Scotland is uniquely positioned to lead the nationwide heat pump roll-out due to a higher proportion of homes and businesses not being connected to the gas grid. Our factory in Livingston is also the UK’s largest producer of air source heat pumps, demonstrating the potential for Scotland to be the centre of heat pump manufacturing in the UK and beyond.

“Crucially to increase the uptake of heat pumps for households, there must be a rebalancing of the wholesale price of electricity with gas. A reduction in the cost of electricity would help encourage homeowners to switch to a heat pump.

“Upskilling the current installer base, as we are doing in Livingston with our heat pump training centre, will also be crucial to meeting the growing demand for the technology and supporting the transition to renewable heating. This will create jobs, reduce the UK’s dependence on volatile oil and gas markets, and support Scotland in reaching Net Zero by 2045.”
