Pilkington UK recently met with Theresa Griffin MEP and Conor McGinn MP to discuss future measures that could be taken to support the energy efficient developments in Europe’s glass and glazing sector.
Organised in conjunction with Glass for Europe, the visit took place at Pilkington’s manufacturing facility, which is based in St. Helens, Merseyside.
As an international trade association for manufacturers of flat glass, Glass for Europe has been petitioning for a supportive legislative framework for the sector. The body believes that the construction sector can deliver more energy savings if the EU endeavours to triple the current renovation rate. This would boost the demand for energy efficient glazing and, in turn, boost the glass industry.
Representing the North West of England, Theresa Griffin MEP was given a tour of Pilkington’s UK5 float glass manufacturing line, along with Conor McGinn, the MP for St. Helens North. The two then met with Pilkington UK’s Managing Director, Matt Buckley, to discuss its offline coater at Crowley Hill.
The visitors were impressed with Pilkington’s commitment to producing energy efficient glazing products for the commercial and domestic markets, which has been reflected in its decision to invest in both R&D and its manufacturing facilities.
Following the visit, Theresa Griffin MEP addressed the need for legally binding energy efficiency targets across Europe to help those suffering energy poverty.
As Labour’s European Spokesperson for Industry and Energy, she added: ‘It’s incredibly important that I meet with industry and trade unions that are affected by the legislation that the European Parliament is working on’.
