A highly effective product combination used to reduce airborne sound transmission in separating floors where access or disruption to the ceiling below is not possible, has received confirmation of its one hour fire resistance by BRE (Building Research Establishment). The combination of Hush Slab 100 sound absorber slabs and Hush Mesh Firewire enables the voids of timber joisted floors to be acoustically upgraded simply by lifting the floor boards or floor panels.
Hush Mesh Firewire is used to form ‘trays’ between the joists for the insulation slab to sit within, meaning there is no need to remove the ceiling below to access the internal floor structure – perfect for building renovations and conversions featuring lath and plaster ceilings.
Hush Slab 100 plus Hush Mesh Firewire can be used with confidence in timber floor constructions where the specification requires products to offer fire resistance for 60 minutes following an independent assessment by experts at BRE. They have confirmed that this combination of products will provide this level of fire resistance providing Hush Acoustics’ installation guidance has been followed correctly.
As a Class A1 rated product in terms of reaction to fire, Hush Slab 100 is non-combustible and will not contribute to the development of fire at any stage. This is due to its mineral wool composition, formed of high density mineral fibre produced from inorganic rock, which is also extremely durable and non-hygroscopic, meaning it is not susceptible to the growth of fungi, mould or bacteria, vermin or rotting.
In order to provide a high level of acoustic insulation, Hush Slab 100 must be fitted tightly between the timber joists using the correct methods, and Hush Mesh Firewire is key to this in many timber floor constructions. It enables Hush Slab to be contained should the plasterboard or lath and plaster ceiling below become detached.
Hush Mesh Firewire is installed by rolling it out at 90 degrees to the direction of the joists, dressing it down the side of the joists, across the back of the ceiling, up the other side and over the top of the next joist. It is secured in place by stapling to the tops of the joists. Easy and safe to use, it is supplied in 1200mm wide rolls, 50m long, providing coverage of 60 square metre per roll.
Hush Slab and Hush Mesh Firewire are used together in two of Hush Acoustics fully tested acoustic floor systems widely used in refurbishment and material change of use projects – the HD1006: Hush System 1 and HD1030 Hush System LP. This fire resistant combination, however, can also be incorporated within bespoke acoustic designs for all kinds of projects to achieve sound insulation levels that comply with all the applicable Building Regulations, including Approved Document E in England & Wales.
By commissioning a fire risk assessment from BRE, Hush Acoustics is helping specifiers to make informed decisions in the design of acoustic floors to meet a specified level of fire resistance.
