OPTIM-R Roofing System insulates new Premier Inn at HIC

  • 7 Dec 2015

Kingspan’s optimum performance OPTIM-R Roofing System has been installed at a new Premier Inn adjoined to Harrogate’s International Centre (HIC).

Welcoming over 155,000 business visitors each year, HIC is the third largest value of its kind in the UK. The new adjoining 6 storey Premier Inn was designed by Howarth Litchfield Partnership, combining modern features with a traditional York stone façade to complement the surrounding architecture.

The building’s flat roof incorporates a metre-wide, 18 metre long channel to maintain drainage. It was essential that this was properly insulated whilst still providing the required fall, leading subcontractor Protect Roofing to specify the Kingspan OPTIM-R Roofing System.

Kingspan OPTIM-R panels utilise vacuum insulation technology to achieve the required thermal performance with a far thinner material than conventional insulation.

At 30mm thick, the OPTIM-R panels were fitted within the channel alongside OPTIM-R flex infill strips of a matching thickness. These can be cut or penetrated to a account for all design requirements.

An additional 25mm overlay of Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 LPC/FM was then installed to receive the adhered single-ply roof membrane.

David McLean, Managing Director of subcontractor Protech Roofing commented: “We found the Kingspan OPTIM-R panels lightweight and easy to handle and we were able to get them laid quickly following the plan provided by Kingspan Insulation’s technical team.

Obviously it was essential to achieve a U-value that was compliant with the Building Regulations and the Kingspan OPTIM-R Roofing System gave our client the confidence that this would be met without compromising drainage.”

Available in thicknesses between 20-40mm, Kingspan OPTIM-R panels are certified under the BDA Agrément scheme. The independent certification confirms a thermal conductivity of 0.007 W/m2K and is recognised by NHBC and the LABC.

This can help to fast-track projects through the procedures and approvals processes and reduce costs.
