Huddersfield Leisure Centre featuring Protan's prefabricated roofing system

Prefabricated roofing system specified for new leisure centre

  • 7 Sep 2015

Huddersfield Leisure Centre has utilised a combination of Protan roofing products as part of its £36m development.

The new leisure centre, being constructed by BAM for Kirklees Council, features a combination of 6500m2 of Protan SE prefabricated single ply membrane and 1500m2 of Protan’s ProGreen green roof system.

The ecology requirements and local area prompted the choice of single ply and green roofing, and a prefabricated system was specified to meet the high performance criteria dictated by the exposed location and size of the roof, which an adhered system would struggle to comply with

A prefabricated system also meant a more cost-effective solution, which was quicker to install with minimal on-site wastage.

The area of green roof was implemented to provide an aesthetically pleasing look for people living in neighbouring homes which overlook the development.

As a further addition, grey water recycling will be used for the toilet at the leisure centre to reduce mains water consumption and environmental impact.

Prefabricated roofing system

Protan’s prefabricated system relies upon Protan SE single ply membrane, which has been developed to withstand the harshest weather conditions in Europe and is proven to perform for up to 30 years.

The membrane is factory-welded to order, using Protan’s in-house Proplan software calculating the most efficient usage of material to minimise waste.

Studies have shown that Protan’s prefabricated roof process can cut welding by up to 70% on a typical roof, equivalent to 60 hours’ less labour and its associated cost.

The green roof uses Protan ProGreen membrane as a base, and is then covered with growth medium. Proton prefabricated the green roof membrane enabling more efficient use of material and labour on-site.
